How we choose

We want you to trust our picks, so here’s exactly how they’re made, including what we don’t do.

What we do

1. Start with the problem, not the product. Every guide begins with official UK advice and the free fixes.
2. Shortlist from what UK buyers can actually get on Amazon UK and from UK retailers.
3. Check the specs that matter, such as lumens, capacity, wattage, battery life and fitting type, against what the job needs.
4. Check UK safety standards where they apply, such as BS EN 50291 for CO alarms, BS EN 14604 for smoke alarms and BS EN 1869 for fire blankets, and we tell you to look for them on the listing.
5. Read owner reviews for patterns, especially repeated failures, not star averages.
6. Write down real downsides for every pick.
7. Re-check regularly and update the date on each guide.

What we don’t do

• We don’t lab-test products, and we never claim to. Picks are researched and recommended.
• We don’t show prices, because they change daily. Use “Check price” for today’s price.
• We don’t accept payment to include or rank a product.
• We don’t use fake ratings or star scores.

Badges explained

Best overall the pick most homes should get. Budget pick does the job for less. Upgrade pick worth it if you have a specific need. Best for the situation each pick suits.
